Jamie Barkway success at Newman University

Andy Newman, Director of Soccer is delighted to announce that United Sports USA men’s soccer client Jamie Barkway from York, England was named Freshman player of the year and also named to the Heartland  Conference Team of the Year in his first season with NCAA Division 2 Newman University, Kansas.

The 18 year old former pupil of Archbishop Holgate’s School attended an assessment day in Manchester last year has come a long way since then in just 12 months. All the staff at both United Sports USA and Newman University are delighted for Jamie and his parents Andy and Sophie given all the hard work they have put in to make the option of becoming a full time student athlete happen. Jamie plays full time soccer and studies Business at Newman University.

Coach Cliff Brown says:

“Jamie has done very well. He has started and played virtually every minute, other than when he had a couple of minor injuries. As most international players he had to adjust to the grind of college soccer. Our opening 21 days saw 9 games, so a game every 2.5 days. Not easy. But he came in very fit and has adjusted very well. He is a true leader in every sense of the word, but is still growing in that role.”

Mr Brown also happy to add:
“He has two goals on the season, the last was an overtime winner in our last home game. Scored in the flow of play. A fantastic goal. The other was a set piece, and as you may have guessed was a headed goal.”

Newman University writes:
“Barkway, a freshman from York, England, was named the Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year and All-Heartland Conference First Team. He has started in 16 of NU’s 17 matches on defense. The Jet defense has totaled six shutouts and averages 1.35 goals per match. Barkway has scored two goals this season, including the match-winner in a 2-1 double overtime win over Rogers State. He also has one assist.”

The Jets men’s soccer team had an amazing season and finished second in the Heartland Conference. This was their best season since Jets joined NCAA Division II and we are happy that our client Jamie Barkway help the team to their success.
